young children at a connecticut elementary school. tory dunnan joins us from newtown with new information on the victims. >>reporter:27 people were killed yesterday. most of them. children just 6 and 7 years old. we can now put names and faces to those killed at sandy hook elementary school. among them, 27-year- old first grade teacher, victoria soto. her family says she died trying to protect her students. robbie parker lost his daugter emilie. >> "she always had something kind to say about anybody. she is an incredible person and i am so blessed to be her dad." >>reporter: the state medical examiner said he believes all the children killed were first graders as police continue to search for evidence in every "crack and crevice" of the school, the community is trying to figure out just how to cope. for the victims of the deadly shooting in connecticut. people gathered for a candlelight vigil at the home town of teacher victoria soto. as the community mourns we now know the names of the youngest victims. reporter: tonight we're hearing a father's anguish, robby parker lost his daughter emily. she was six. >> i don't know how you get through michigan like -- through something like this. i don't understand. >> and this evening a portrait of the gunman. in one class, every student but one shot and killed. 15 first grades in that one room alone lost in an instant in another classroom, five of the victims were children. a little boy who had a twin sister, he died. his twin in another classroom, hiding in the bathroom with her teacher, survived. the school principal is among the dead. dawn hochsprung and she might have turned on the p.a. system so the eachers could be warned. mary sher hawk. her family saying mary felt like she was doing god's work, another teamer, victor yeah soto, her body found shielding her students. >> her life's dream was to be a teacher, and her instincts kicked in. >> an

in contract connecticut. we'll get there. welcome. i'm rick folbaum. >> i'm arthel nevil. the president is to address the nation at one of the worst mass shootings in u.s. history. it's the fourth trip to a shas shooting to an american city. going to ed henry in newtown with the latest. ed, tell us about the president's evening there in connecticut, what is expected. >> reporter: as the mentioned the first visit since the tragedy, remember that all this latest out so horribly at the elementary school which is still basically a crime seen. the high school behind me is where there will be an interfaith prayer service where the president will speak, really the first time since we saw him friday choke back tears at the white house as he talked about this awful tragedy. he will be meeting before the interfaith prayer service with families of some of the victims, so many of the victims so young. very difficult. also, he'll be meeting with the first responders to thank them for all they have done not just in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy but since then. i spoke with someone from the r

's chris januarying is live for news newtown. chris, i know we just heard there from the connecticut state police but let's talk about what's happening around you today o. >> reporter: think the significant thing we heard from lieutenant vance a few minutes ago was confirming that that part of the investigation is over and some of the bodies have begun to be released to the families. i have talked to many of the religious leaders in this community. of course, they have spent the last 48 hours or so trying to console their congregations and now many of them are planning for funerals. at least eight of them at the local catholic church, one at the local synagogue. we are beginning to hear from the families of the victim -- victims as well. 6-year-old emelie parker's dad held a small news conference last night and robbie parker talked about his daughter. here's what he said. >> we find comfort, reflecting on the incredible person that emelie was and how many lives she was able to touch in her short time here on earth. emelie was bright, creative and very loving. emilie was always willing to t

, connecticut. >> on friday, we learn more than two dozen people were killed when a gunman opened fire at an elementary school. most who died were elementary children with their lives ahead of them. among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives helping children fulfill their dreams. our hearts are broken today. we grieve for the families of those we lost. we keep in our prayers those who survived. they know their child's innocence has been torn away far too early. as a nation, we have endured far too many of these tragedies the past few years. an elementary school in newtown, a shopping mall again from oregon, a movie theater of in colorado, countless streetcorners and places like chicago and philadelphia. any of these neighborhoods could be our own. we have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this from happening. regardless of politics. this weekend, michele and i are doing what i know every parent is doing, holding our children as close as we can and reminding them how much we love them. to families in connecticut, t
